Mr. Ashok N. Khadse
Director, Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) (Retd. IFS)
Welcome to the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) website!
I am Mr. Ashok N. Khadse, and it is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the Director of BRTC since January 2024. With a long and distinguished career in the Indian Forest Service (IFS), including roles as Chief Conservator of Forest and Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, I have dedicated my professional life to the stewardship and sustainable management of our natural resources.
At BRTC, our mission is to be at the forefront of bamboo research and training, driving innovation and fostering sustainable development. My tenure here is focused on several key initiatives:
1. Promoting Sustainable Bamboo Cultivation and Utilization: We aim to enhance our understanding of bamboo species and growth patterns, ensuring that our practices support both environmental sustainability and community development.
2. Advancing Innovation: By spearheading research and adopting new technologies, we strive to improve bamboo processing and product design, thereby opening new avenues for the sector.
3. Empowering Livelihoods: We are committed to supporting bamboo-based livelihoods through targeted training and skill development programs. Our goal is to uplift artisans and entrepreneurs, ensuring the growth and sustainability of the bamboo sector.
One of my proudest achievements was the conceptualization and establishment of a state-level multi-purpose academy, which represents a ₹250.00 crore investment in advancing forestry education and capacity building. Additionally, the development of an e-auction system for timber sales has streamlined the process, enhancing transparency and efficiency.
My vision for BRTC is rooted in sustainable development and effective forest resource management. Under my leadership, we are dedicated to empowering communities, enhancing livelihoods, and promoting the sustainable use of bamboo. Our commitment is unwavering as we continue to advance our mission and achieve new milestones.
Thank you for visiting our website. I look forward to engaging with you as we work together towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the bamboo sector.
Shri. Sudhir Mungantiwar
Hon'ble Minister (Forests, Cultural Affairs, Fisheries) Maharashtra State.
Bamboo – A Divine Tree
In the 21st century, bamboo is recognized as the "Green Gold." It is a multipurpose species, a valuable gift bestowed upon humanity by Mother Nature.
Over the past few decades, the importance of bamboo in daily life has diminished due to modernization and the availability of alternative materials. However, considering the excellent qualities of bamboo and its traditional use in the rural economy, it is crucial to rejuvenate its role. In addition to its traditional uses, bamboo is now widely utilized in sectors such as construction, furniture, plywood, ethanol production, charcoal, and bamboo pellets.
Recognizing the significance of bamboo, the Government of Maharashtra established the Bamboo Research and Training Centre, Chichpalli (BIRTC) as an autonomous institute under the Forest Department on 4th December 2014. Through this institute, over 740 bamboo artisans have been trained in enhancing their skills in bamboo craftsmanship, basketry, furniture making, construction, etc. Additionally, around 1200 women from various self-help groups have received training to create bamboo products.
To provide technical and supervisory employment opportunities to young men and women in the bamboo sector, the "Diploma in Bamboo Technology," a unique course, is conducted through BRTC.
I am confident that bamboo, as a resource, will play a vital role in Maharashtra's development. The Bamboo Research and Training Centre, Chichpalli, will undoubtedly be a valuable platform for young men and women, entrepreneurs, government and non-government organizations, progressive farmers, philanthropic cooperative institutions, and others to engage in the bamboo sector.
Executive Committee and Governing Body of BRTC
The Maharashtra State Government, through Government Resolution No. Esst-2014/Sl.No-64/Part-2/F9/Mantralay, Mumbai dated 04-12-2014, established the “Bamboo Research and Training Centre, Chichpalli (BRTC)” in Chandrapur as an autonomous institute.
The “BRTC Society” is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Regd. No. MAH/210) on 15.07.2015, and also under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950 (Trust Regd. No. F-13840) on 20.08.2015. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of association and rules and regulations of BRTC were approved by the Government of Maharashtra vide letter no. bambusa-2014/Sr.No.119/F-2 dated 03 May 2015.
